Knowing Me – Alan Partridge – Knowing You

The inspired pairing of Brighton and Hove Gay Men’s Chorus with Alan Partridge, to provide some high profile Brighton-themed excitement, proved an ideal combination when he visited Brighton on 23rd November, to sign copies of his autobiography. The crowds were already queuing around the block as we arrived at Waterstones, all of them eager to meet Alan Partridge and get their signed copy of ‘I Partridge, We need to talk about Alan’.

With sound checks over, reporters and film crews in place and eager customers lining the stairs all the way to the second floor, the entertainment commenced with Playgrounds and City Parks. Having not expected to be serenaded by a local recording group, the happy crowd just loved us. It seems strange to look into a crowd and watch people filming us on mobile phones, something I suppose we will just have to get used to. Five tracks later, Heroes proved a fitting track, for the arrival of Alan Partridge as he descended from the next floor and the waiting ended for a thrilled crowd.

As you might expect, Alan’s distinctive humour shone, as he thanked Brighton and Hove Gay Men’s Chorus, and delighted the crowds, with anecdotes about his love of Brighton’s wit, wisdom and tolerance, as well as its many colourful characters. Then after the all important photo opportunity, with pen in hand, it was down to business and the book signing began.

Stripping off and Helping the Bank Manager!

On the 30th November, the public were treated to the release of Gay Times Naked Edition.  Raising money for the Elton John Foundation, the Brighton and Hove Gay Men’s Chorus agreed to strip off!  An amaing experience which you can find out more about by a) buying a copy! and b)checking out the Gay Times Blogs, where chorus member Chris Jessop talks about his experience doing the shoot.

On Sat 10th December the guys spent their Saturday morning in Barclays Bank in Hove.  Not fixing their Christmas overdrafts, but helping the branch staff to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Fund.  Of course the guys were only too happy to help given their history of raising money for charity and enjoyed giving out some Chrismas Cheer.

30 x Gay Men… 10 x Tracks… 1 x Groundbreaking Album…

The Brighton And Hove Gay Men’s Chorus

Released 5 December 2011Featuring alternative versions of tracks by Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Neil Young, Ian McCulloch and more

The Brighton and Hove Gay Men’s Chorus, who grabbed global attention last month when they announced a £1 million record deal with Universal, will release their eponymous debut album on Monday 5 December 2011.

Breaking new ground for a gay music act, The Brighton and Hove Gay Men’s Chorus have rejected the typical ‘gay’ anthems for the more unusual repertoire of UK and American alternative rock and indie folk fare.

From Radiohead’s Top 5 hit ‘No Surprises’, David Bowie’s No. 1 signature song ‘Heroes’, the brilliantly melancholic ‘Hurt’ (originally by Nine Inch Nails and later covered by country hero Johnny Cash), the Ian McCulloch album track ‘Playgrounds and City Parks’ and ‘Last Goodbye’ from the second album by UK indie boys The Enemy, to songs by Neil Young, Ron Sexsmith, Walter Trout and Richard and Linda Thompson, ‘The Brighton and Hove Gay Men’s Chorus’ is an album of great songs, performed in a thrilling new musical way.

The album will also include a previously unreleased song by acoustic singer songwriter Thea Gilmore, ‘Somewhere For Me’. Recorded at Kore Studios and Goldust Studios in London, the album is produced by Michael and Marli Harwood.

The Brighton and Hove Gay Men’s Chorus formed six years ago by John Hamilton and Jason Pimblett and now comprises of 30 members. The overall aim of the Chorus was to provide a community for gay men to share experiences, have fun but most importantly develop and learn vocal abilities and embrace new styles of music not often associated with the gay community.
